Leaving a Gift
After providing for your family and friends, you might consider including a gift to us in your Will. No matter what the size of gift, legacies will allow us to plan for the future with added confidence and can make a significant difference to what we can do to improve the care, comfort and support of patients at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. Remembering us in your Will won’t cost you a penny during your lifetime, but it will make an enormous difference to the future of patients at the hospital.
How to Leave a Legacy to CW+
If you would like to leave a gift to us there are two main types of legacy which you might consider:
Pecuniary legacy: This gift is a set sum of money which can be index-linked to maintain its value in line with inflation.
Residuary legacy: This is a share (or all) of the residue of your estate when all other commitments have been settled.
We are also grateful for gifts of art. If you would like to leave an item of art from your collection, this is known as a Specific legacy. If you are considering such a gift, we would ask you to contact us beforehand so that we might discuss your intentions with you further. We only accept donations of art that we are able to look after and that meet our acquisitions criteria (this may be slightly stricter than other institutions, given that our collection is on display in a hospital environment). For this reason, we can only accept such gifts on the condition that, should we want to, we would be able to sell them.
To discuss leaving a piece of art, please contact Trystan Hawkins on 020 3315 6614 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
Suggested wording for your Will
Leaving a gift to us in your will is easy; all you need to do is include the following words:
‘I give the [sum of / % share of residue of my estate / item specified] to the Board of Trustees of CWPLUS, 4 Verney House, 1B Hollywood Road, London, SW10 9HS, registered charity number 1169897 absolutely for its general charitable purposes. I declare that the receipt of the Chief Executive for the time being of CW+ shall be a sufficient discharge to my Executor.’
Please note: We strongly recommend that you consult your legal advisor when making or altering your Will, in particular for our overseas supporters, where different laws apply. We would also encourage you to share your plans with your loved ones.
Currently, inheritance tax is payable at 40% on estates of over £325,000 (tax year 2011-12). Leaving a legacy can be tax-effective as gifts to charities such as CW+ are exempt from inheritance tax. Recent changes to tax laws mean that those who leave 10% (or more) of their net estate to charity will qualify for a reduction in the rate of any inheritance tax payable from 40% to 36%.
Everyone’s tax situation is different and we always recommend you seek individual advice from your financial or legal advisor.
We understand the importance of making a Will to organise your affairs and ensure that your estate benefits your loved ones and the organisations and charities that matter to you. Although there is no obligation to do so, we hope that patients might consider leaving a gift to us in their will, to support our future work.
