A Little Helping Hand

Supporting a new era in innovation, research and discovery

Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is a leading centre for maternity and paediatric services, delivering over 10,000 babies every year. We are passionate about the quality of care we provide, and continually strive to give babies, parents and families everything they need for the best start in life.

Sadly, each year millions of babies and families are affected by premature births, complications during birth and birth defects – however, in many cases these complications could be prevented.

Funding for research into complications during pregnancy and childbirth is a critical need. We are looking to build on our strengths in research, innovation and discovery to transform the care of mums, babies and their families.

By choosing to donate to CW+, your gift will go towards our vital research in maternal health and complications in pregnancy and childbirth, and innovation programmes led by our nurses, midwives and doctors.

Together we can support pregnant women and their families, helping make a real difference to their pregnancy journey, birth and beyond.

Your donation, whatever the size, could make a big impact.

This will include understanding and preventing disease pre-birth, developing better treatments for mums and their babies, as well as using the latest remote technology to map and predict disease patterns across our local communities.

£1,000

could help fund a lifesaving cooling blanket to circulate cool water around a baby in intensive care, reducing the risk of seizures and brain injury by 50% and helping parents to hold and bond with their baby.

£10,000

could fund a Horizon Fellowship for one year to work with our NHS staff to develop their innovative ideas and projects to tackle the most urgent challenges across our work with women and children.

£25,000

could fund a year of running expenses for a Clinical Research Fellow performing scientific research into maternal health, helping to prevent life threatening complications in pregnancy and childbirth

Sophie and Louis’ story:

Sophie caught COVID-19 when she was 29 weeks pregnant and ended up in intensive care at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, where her son Louis was born by emergency caesarean section two days later.

Louis weighed just under 3.5lbs and spent the first eight weeks of his life in our newly opened Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

During this particularly challenging period of the pandemic, strict rules permitted visitors into the hospital. The first time Louis met his Dad, Stuart, he was 15 days old. Separated immediately at birth and subsequently sedated and ventilated in ICU, Sophie first met her baby boy when he was three weeks old.

Six weeks later, Sophie and Louis were able to go home. Sophie says: “I cannot thank the amazing teams at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital enough – they literally saved our family. I am so grateful that Louis and I were not only able to benefit from the new, state-of-the-art facilities, advanced technologies and innovative approaches to care, but that we were also looked after by such incredible nurses and doctors.”

The heart-breaking effects of COVID-19 on pregnant women has driven our efforts to find better ways to manage infection in pregnancy.  Our CW+ funded research aims to find treatments to protect mother and baby from harmful effects of the infection and to help clinicians choose the best time to delivery a baby.
