We are excited to announce a new commission with illustrator and printmaker Melissa North. Melissa will be working on a series of bespoke artworks for Nell Gwynne Ward at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
Our arts in health programme aims to create healing environments for our patients and staff, transforming and enhancing clinical spaces and bringing together the healing power of art with the latest innovations in design to create a patient-focused environment. This commission is the final stage in our refurbishment of Nell Gwynne, the Stroke and Neurology rehabilitation ward.
The space has been refreshed with new signage and colours to distinguish bed bay areas, adaptable sensory lighting, wood-look flooring and new furniture – all part of our work to integrate dementia-friendly design across our hospitals.

Melissa is a London-based artist, and her vibrant artworks use a silk-screen print aesthetic. Influenced by analogue processes, Melissa collages together photographs and drawings to create illustrations that have a tactile quality. As a lover of travel, Melissa often creates work about place and memory. Bringing her images to life with a narrative is an important part of her process, inspired by researching local history and wildlife, or looking into the architecture and urban details of a location.
Melissa will be working closely with patients and staff to create a body of work that captures the local community around the hospital, and the London landscape. We look forward to seeing her artwork at our hospital – some examples of her past work are below.
