JINNY BLOM

CW+ appointed renowned landscape artist Jinny Blom to design the CW+ Greenhaven, in collaboration with the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. This indoor garden provides a quiet space for patients to visit and get away from the ward, as well as a place for visitors and staff to enjoy. It gives patients a target to work towards with their physiotherapists, and research shows that for older patients, interaction with plants and foliage improves cognitive function and reduces agitated behaviour.

Jinny Blom is a former Psychologist and Psychotherapist and worked in the public sector in residential mental health for ten years before moving to landscape design.

“For a garden to be pleasing it has to be comfortable and accessible. We have considered the various contexts in which it might be used and have designed a multidimensional park. It is sociable or private as the circumstances demand and we feel confident that it will bring a lot of pleasure to those who can access it. The planting is rich and exotic with huge trees that can grow out into the atrium. It’s exciting!”

As part of our £25 million Critical Care Project, Jinny has also been commissioned to design the Sky Garden, a new botanical area adjacent to the Adult Intensive Care Unit in Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. The Sky Garden is one of only two green spaces in the UK designed specifically to incorporate the physical and psychological needs of intensive care patients and their families. Jinny’s design will incorporate space for hospital beds and wheelchairs as well as spaces offering seclusive or expansive atmospheres.
