Dementia Friendly Design
Research has found that for older patients, particularly those with dementia, being in an unfamiliar setting such as hospital can often cause more confusion and distress. We have installed supportive design improvements throughout the older patients wards at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, including clear, visible and identifiable signage.
Individual and recognisable artworks with corresponding colour themes have been installed in each bed bay to help with orientation and to start conversations, which can help with reminiscence. We have also installed furniture to sit the needs of older patients including chairs with armrests, higher tables and clocks in each bay which display the date, day, year and time.
