International lecture on our Patient Environment and Experience programme

24 May 2017

24th May 2017

We were delighted to be invited to give a lecture at the Advanced Studies Conference: Hospitality and Mental Health organised by the Institute for Social Aesthetics and Mental Health, Sigmund-Freud-University in Vienna and the Aesthetics in Mental Health Network of the Collaborating Centre for Values-based Practice, University of Oxford on 19th May.

The conference explored the concept of ‘hospitality’ and how to create warm and healing atmospheres in healthcare. There was a variety of lectures, including medical ethics, 'nursing openheartedness' and creating enhancing environments for staff and patients.

Our lecture showcased our unique Patient Environment and Experience programme at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust which transforms the hospital experience and clinical environment. We demonstrated how we brought together artists, designers and clinicians to create a calmer environment to be treated in the new A&E department. We also highlighted our Care of Older People programme which brings music, art, craft and movement activities to help improve social inclusion, auditory and verbal memory, mood, and visual awareness in our older patients. Finally, we shared our exciting plans to redevelop the adult and neonatal intensive care units to provide a first-class environment in which to treat patients. Bespoke lighting, acoustics and design will be used to reduce anxiety, delirium, pain and stress for patients and their loved ones.

It was a fantastic event and we feel privileged to have been invited to participate. We are looking forward to welcoming some of the other international speakers to visit us to learn more about our work and to discuss potential collaborations. Following the conference, we have been invited to write an article for a book surrounding this topic which we are looking forward to working on.

Presentation featured in Die Furche magazine
