On Wednesday 2 July, CW+ and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust celebrated a major construction milestone at West Middlesex University Hospital with the ‘topping out’ of the new Ambulatory Diagnostic Centre, marking the completion of the main structure. The event was co-hosted by Bouygues UK, the construction company for the project.

Staff, local businesses and members of the community – including Ruth Cadbury, MP for Brentford and Isleworth, and Councillor Amy Croft, Mayor of Hounslow – gathered on the fourth floor of the new site to mark the occasion.

Improving access to treatment and diagnostics in West London

Once fully operational, the sustainable £80m centre will double the hospital’s capacity for cancer and renal care, improve local access to vital diagnostics, and provide a new education and training hub for NHS staff.

Lesley Watts, CEO of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, said:  ‘This new facility supports our wider vision to deliver high-quality, accessible care closer to home, and we are proud to play a leading role in strengthening and improving NHS services in West London. I would like to thank our teams and partners whose hard work has made this possible, and I look forward to seeing the positive impact that it will have for our patients and staff for years to come.’

Creating a best-in-class facility

CW+ is raising £1.5m towards the cost of the build, and is closely involved in making the new centre a best-in-class environment for patients by:

  • Securing world-class imaging technology. CW+ is fundraising for a MRI cardiac scanner to improve access to heart imaging in Hounslow, the area with the highest heart failure admissions in England.
  • Providing expertise in patient environment and design. CW+ is contributing to an uplift of furniture in key areas, to create a less clinical feel. This will include Macmillan-approved chemotherapy and dialysis chairs to offer patients greater comfort and control during long treatments.
  • Commissioning engaging digital art. Bespoke digital installations will transform waiting and treatment areas into soothing environments, providing a welcome distraction and reducing stress for patients and families.
  • Bringing nature into the heart of the design. We are working with the project architects on landscaping around the new facility and a terrace on the fourth floor.

Chris Chaney, Chief Executive of CW+, said: ‘The Ambulatory Diagnostic Centre is a game-changer for healthcare in this part of London, and we’re delighted to support it. Almost 85,000 additional patient diagnostic and treatment procedures every year will mean more local people accessing the care they need closer to home instead of having to travel out of borough.

‘There are lots of ways in which you can get involved in our campaign to raise money for this vital new facility – this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to have a lasting impact on healthcare in our community.’
