Evaluating and sharing the impact of our programmes and enhancements is an important aspect of our work, helping to shape best practice nationally and internationally.
We support work that improves clinical outcomes for patients, improves the hospital experience for patients and visitors, and improves the wellbeing of staff. By sharing the results of our work, we can scale up our successes for the benefit of patients and staff across the NHS.
Working with our Trust, we have helped to create state-of-the-art environments that enhance the experience of patients, visitors and staff members, as well as introducing innovative technologies that contribute to improved clinical outcomes. The new Adult Intensive Care Unit at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital is an example of this: opened in 2020, the new unit included a 45% expansion in size, numerous technological and environmental enhancements, and new respite spaces including the award-winning Sky Garden.
The CW Innovation programme helps to ensure that our Trust remains at the forefront of advances in digital health technologies, not only improving the health outcomes of patients in our Trust but also building the evidence that will help other providers do the same. For example, DrDoctor, a digital platform that manages patient communications, was supported by CW Innovation in a successful 2019 pilot and has since been rolled out across north-west London, where it is expected to reduce waiting lists by up to 35%.
The wellbeing of our patient and staff community is at the heart of everything we do. The arts have a unique role to play in this – our Arts for All programme brings daily music, performance and creative activities to more than 20,000 patients each year, and the CW+ MediCinema shows more than 200 screenings annually.Â
Additionally, in 2023 we awarded more than £1m to Trust staff via our extensive grants programme. We funded projects supporting patient experience, staff wellbeing, training, and pilots of innovative new clinical practices, roles and technologies.
I’ve seen first-hand the impact that these redevelopments have already made. By incorporating innovations and digital solutions that can be personalised to each patient, we have seen reductions in anxiety, pain and stress, improving patient experience and recovery
Leigh Paxton, Matron of the Adult Intensive Care Unit at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital
CW Innovation does a huge amount to support staff in our Trust. We get to see our ideas come to life, which provides a tremendous sense of achievement. In addition, we acquire new skills that help us do our jobs better and develop our careers further
Sadia Khan, Consultant Cardiologist and Clinical Lead for Innovation
Whenever we enter a ward or bay, patients are so happy. It’s transformative. You watch people start completely flat on a bed, and gradually their eyes will open and their head will come up. Before you know it, they're sitting up and clapping and singing. It’s amazing
