On the wards

We believe in the transformative power of the arts. Our Arts for All programme has been co-designed with staff and patients to engage, inspire and uplift the hospital community by providing an array of creative health experiences and events.

By taking interactive and immersive arts activities into the wards, we aim to:

  • enhance physical and emotional wellbeing
  • foster a sense of community
  • support the recovery process

Workshops and classes

We deliver a variety of workshops and classes tailored to our hospital community. From painting and drawing to music and dance, our sessions are led by a team of Artists in Residence and are designed to inspire, stimulate and relieve anxiety.

Live performances

Experience the joy of live music, theatre and dance. Our performance programme features a regular line-up of talented artists who bring cultural enrichment directly to patients and staff on our wards.

Creative health for patients

We offer bedside arts activities including crafts, storytelling and music to engage patients and support the healing process. These activities are customised to meet the unique needs and preferences of each individual.

Community projects

CW+ partners including Age UK and Hammersmith Community Gardens Association visit our wards, encouraging peer-to-peer support, lifting spirits and strengthening the bonds between patients, staff and our wider community.

Art therapy

CW+ has funded Art Therapy at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust since 2014. Our art therapy sessions are designed to offer a safe and supportive environment in which participants can use art to express themselves.

Art psychotherapists Susan Rudnik and Emma Parkinson hold one-to-one and group therapy sessions for our younger patients, tailored to meet individual needs. The aim is to help them process emotions and trauma, reduce stress and anxiety, and develop coping skills.

Art psychotherapist Susan Rudnik talks about how art psychotherapy benefits paediatric patients at our hospitals

Today, the paediatric art psychotherapy service includes outpatient work, staff groups and a highly regarded inpatient service across both hospitals. Patients with long-term life-limiting illnesses, oncology patients, and people in mental health crisis or with eating disorders are among those who benefit.

With thanks to the Khoo Teck Puat UK Foundation for its generous support of our Art Therapy programme.
