A work from the CW+ art collection by celebrated British artist Prunella Clough is currently on display in a major exhibition at Thomas Dane Gallery in London.
Small Stack, part of the CW+ art collection, is included in Out and About: Prunella Clough Paintings from the 1980s and 1990s, which opened on 4 June and runs until 25 July 2026. The exhibition is curated by Jenni Lomax, former Director of Camden Art Centre.
Celebrating a major British artist
Widely regarded as one of the most distinctive British painters of the 20th century, Prunella Clough is known for her quietly powerful explorations of everyday urban and industrial landscapes.
Born in Chelsea, Prunella studied at Chelsea School of Art and Camberwell School of Art. She was a patron of the former Chelsea and Westminster Hospital Arts Programme, and Small Stack was acquired for the collection during her lifetime, following its inclusion in a major exhibition of her work curated by Jenni Lomax at Camden Art Centre in 1996.
Prunella Clough died at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in 1999.
The exhibition focuses on her later work, bringing together a significant selection of paintings that reflect her enduring interest in abstraction, materiality and the overlooked details of the built environment.
Supporting access and conservation
CW+ is pleased to support the exhibition through the loan of Small Stack, enabling wider public access to this important work. As part of the loan, the gallery has generously undertaken conservation treatment, including carefully cleaning the painting in preparation for display and helping to support its long-term preservation.
The conservation work was carried out by Maureen Cross from the Courtauld Institute of Art, reflecting the collaborative effort behind the care and presentation of this significant work.
Laura Bradshaw, Arts Manager at CW+, said: ‘We are delighted to see Prunella Clough’s Small Stack featured in this important exhibition. Partnerships like this are vital in enabling works from the CW+ art collection to reach new audiences beyond the hospital environment, while also supporting their care and conservation for the future.’
The value of partnership
This collaboration highlights the value of partnerships between healthcare, arts organisations and galleries in bringing significant works to new audiences while supporting their care and preservation.
The CW+ art collection forms part of the charity’s Arts in Health programme, which uses art and design to create welcoming hospital environments, support wellbeing and enhance the experience of patients, visitors and staff across Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and West Middlesex University Hospital.
