Research has shown that visual art has a positive effect in healthcare settings. We have a collection of more than 2,000 artworks, including bespoke commissions, many of which are on display in our hospitals and clinics.
World-class artists represented in our collection include Gillian Ayres, Sandra Blow, Tracey Emin, Mary Fedden, Terry Frost, Patrick Heron, Damien Hirst, Albert Irvin, Allen Jones, Isaac Julien, Julian Opie and Eduardo Paolozzi.Â
Collection highlights on the lower-ground floor include Julian Opie’s ‘Dino Crawling’ and ‘Walking’ series, our Heritage Display and Allen Jones’s dynamic sculpture ‘The Acrobat’.Â
The atrium space on the ground floor is home to some of the most iconic works in our collection.Â
In the main reception, you can see Sir Eduardo Paolozzi’s ‘The Healing Arts’, a sculpted collection box commissioned in 1997. Donations received via the box help to fund the arts programme. Â
As you continue through the atrium, look out for Sian Tucker’s ‘Falling Leaves’ installation and Jonathan Delafield Cook’s ‘Jos’ rhino charcoal drawing. Some of our newest additions to the collection, including works by Frank Bowling, Damien Hirst and Alicia Paz, are on prominent display on this floor.Â
As you go up the escalator to the first floor, look out for Albert Irvin’s ‘Hollywood’, named after the road opposite the hospital. You’ll also discover works ranging from ‘The Resurrection’, a 16th-century Renaissance masterpiece by Paolo Veronese in our chapel, to a digital artwork series, ‘Stones Against Diamonds’, by leading contemporary artist Isaac Julien.Â
One of the largest works in the collection, Edward Bawden’s ‘Fantasy on Islamic Architecture’ is best viewed from the second floor. The colourful sculpture is ‘Seraphim’ by Richard Smith, one of the fathers of pop art. The CW+ Studio is wrapped in a design by Andy Council, featuring local landmarks in the shape of a rhino (the unofficial mascot of CW+).Â
On the third floor it’s hard to miss Adam Nathaniel Furman’s dynamic ‘Radiance’ tiled artwork. Stretching around several doorways, it not only creates great visual interest but also provides crucial wayfinding for those navigating the third floor. The scale of Patrick Heron’s ‘Three Banners’ is also best appreciated from this floor.Â
We are currently working to refresh the art on display at West Middlesex University Hospital. This will enable us to acquire and commission new works that best reflect the West Mid community.Â
In addition to our permanent art collection, we also host a series of temporary exhibitions in our hospitals. This is an exciting opportunity for freelance artists and new and existing community partners to exhibit their work, for the benefit of patients and staff.Â
Our award-winning RELAX Digital programme uses moving imagery and installations to distract and relax patients in waiting and treatment areas.Â
We continue to commission artists to work with immersive, virtual and mixed reality. This includes virtual landscapes and skyscapes, AI immersive art and other projects that bring the outside world into our hospitals.
We have commissioned works by Royal College of Art graduates and emerging and established digital artists and animators, as well as featuring world-renowned artists including Brian Eno and Isaac Julien.
