Members of the CW+ Arts Team with their Building Better Healthcare Gold award

CW+ has been recognised with two national awards at the 2025 Building Better Healthcare Awards, winning Gold in the category Best Collaborative Arts Project (Static) and Silver in Best Collaborative Arts Project (Performance).

Now in its 27th year, the Building Better Healthcare Awards celebrate some of the most innovative projects and products shaping the future of healthcare design, technology and delivery. The awards honour outstanding initiatives and teams that make a measurable difference to patients, staff and visitors across the healthcare sector.

Gold award: CW+ Arts Project, Intensive Care Unit, West Middlesex University Hospital

CW+ won Gold for Best Collaborative Arts Project (Static) for Healing Flows, a new art commission at West Middlesex University Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.

Created by artist Lucia Pizzani in collaboration with Jaime Gili, Javier Weyler and Ezequiel Pizzani, this ambitious multimedia installation incorporates ceramics, ceiling tile collages, abstract painting and soundscapes. Drawing on the healing power of nature, Healing Flows transforms this busy clinical environment into a calming and sensory space designed to support recovery and wellbeing.

The project forms part of the charity’s wider commitment to integrating art and design into hospital environments, creating spaces that improve the health and wellbeing of patients and staff.

Elaine Manderson, Deputy Divisional Director of Nursing at the Trust, said: ‘It is vital that hospitals provide spaces that meet the needs of our patients and the people who visit and support them. Before this project, the corridor and waiting area for our Intensive Care Unit at West Mid felt functional and stark. I was involved in this project from the outset, including a visit to Lucia’s studio, and was struck by how her use of nature brought a sense of calm and grounding – exactly what was needed. Through workshops with staff, the artwork became a genuine collaboration, and I’m delighted that we now have a restful, welcoming space for everyone.’

Silver award: CW+ Pluck Hospital Theatre

CW+ also received Silver for Best Collaborative Arts Project (Performance) for Pluck, a mini travelling theatre that brings puppetry and harp music to children on the Trust’s paediatric wards.

Created by CW+ resident artists Mark Levin and Joni-Rae Carrack, Pluck offers moments of joy, escapism and comfort to young patients. The project forms part of CW+’s wider Arts for All programme, which is an ambitious creative health programme that brings a daily dose of music, performance and activities into the hospital environment, using art as a tool for healing.

Celebrating the transformative power of art

Trystan Hawkins, Director of Patient Environment at CW+, said: ‘We’re incredibly proud to have been recognised with two national awards at this year’s Building Better Healthcare Awards. Both Healing Flows and Pluck highlight the transformative power of art in healthcare, from enhancing the built environment to creating moments of connection and joy. These awards are a testament to the collaboration between our artists, clinicians and partners who make this work possible.’
