Saturn gets a new look at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital

Saturn Ward, a children's outpatients department with a cosmic theme - there are planets and rockets on the walls and swirling galaxies on the ceiling, with colourful doors and furniture

Thanks to a generous donation, CW+ has given Saturn – a busy unit at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital – a space-themed makeover, making it a more uplifting and engaging space for young patients aged 0-16.

From the moment they arrive, children can go on a cosmic quest. In the main waiting area, artist Jonathan Woodward’s vibrant murals feature a range of astronaut characters, and elements including a Cosmic Quest booklet, constellation windows and galaxy lightboxes in the ceiling provide distraction and help to ease anxiety as patients wait for surgery.

The unit also includes sensory spaces for patients who need a quieter environment, especially those with autism or ADHD. These rooms are equipped with calming features such as projectors, musical touch walls and sensory carts.

Laura Bradshaw, CW+ Arts Manager, said: ‘This refurbishment has revitalised Saturn, creating an environment that helps to calm nerves for both children and families, making what can be a stressful experience a little bit easier and more enjoyable.’
