We are deeply saddened by the death of Susan Loppert, a trailblazing figure whose vision shaped CW+. In 1993, Susan became the first Director of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital Arts, launched when the hospital opened. Her leadership reimagined what a hospital could be – not only a place for treatment, but a space designed to promote wellbeing, comfort and dignity.
A lasting legacy
Susan believed passionately in the power of art to lift spirits and ease suffering. Under her guidance, hospital spaces were transformed through bold, carefully chosen artworks and cultural events, from visual installations to live music and performances, creating moments of comfort, escape and connection for patients, families and staff during challenging times.
Her ambitious vision continues to guide CW+ today. Our Arts in Health programme, with its 2,000-piece art collection, thoughtfully designed spaces and daily creative activities and performances, builds on the strong foundation that Susan established.
‘A pioneering champion of creative health’
Trystan Hawkins, Director of Patient Environment at CW+, said: ‘In remembering Susan, we honour not only a pioneering champion of creative health, but also a legacy that reaches into the clinical and communal spaces of our hospitals. Her belief that art has an essential role in care continues to shape how we support patients, families and staff today.
‘Her influence is woven into the organisation we have become, and will continue to guide the work we do in the years ahead.’
