With support from CW+, state-of-the-art Adult and Neonatal Intensive Care Units at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital were completed in 2021.
These new facilities were made possible thanks to the success of our £12.5 million Critical Care Campaign, which launched in 2017. They bring together our core strengths in design and environment and digital innovation, providing cutting-edge care to hundreds more patients every year than the old facilities.
The expansion and redevelopment of our Adult Intensive Care Unit (ICU) was funded thanks to the incredible support of Julia and Hans Rausing and other generous donors.
This first-of-its-kind unit takes a patient-led approach to care, with the wellbeing and recovery of patients at the heart of every decision. Each element of the design, from layout and lighting to acoustics and furnishings, was selected to help the brain, body and senses to rest and heal more effectively.
CW+ commissioned leading British landscape photographer Charlie Waite to bring the beauty of the natural world into ICU. He designed four stunning backlit images displaying panoramic landscape photography as part of a partnership between CW+ and Nature Works for Health.
Waite’s works provide a sense of calm and visual distraction to patients, relatives and staff.

This innovative model of care and world-class environment aims to improve clinical outcomes, reduce costs, improve efficiency and decrease risks for patients, as well as setting a new benchmark for critical care facilities in the NHS and beyond.

As part of the redevelopment and expansion of the Adult Intensive Care Unit (ICU), we commissioned award-winning landscape designer Jinny Blom to design an indoor botanical garden.
The Sky Garden brings the outdoors in, supporting the cognitive function, wellbeing and rehabilitation of patients in intensive care.

The new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) – made possible by generous charitable support from the Khoo Teck Puat UK Foundation and other donors – creates an optimal healing environment that can provide life-saving care to an additional 150 babies each year.
Improvements include the latest technology and equipment, bespoke furnishing and specialist lighting. A 40% increase in space not only means more cots, but also more space and privacy around each one.
This enables staff to treat babies with their parents close by, while also reducing the risk of infection, to which premature babies are particularly vulnerable.
